Nag, nag, nag. That's all he did. He couldn't do anything right. Silver ignored her big brother as he followed her around, with his motor mouth. Link acted more like the younger sibling, not her. He was always in a world filled with sunshine and rainbows and flowers and little red ponies. This had been his downfall; he had been defeated by a teacher when he came to bust her out of Hollowcove because Link had been too friendly. Idiot.
"..And now they're in the infirmary," Link said, shaking Silver out of her little trance as he continued to lecture her. None of it was getting through. "How could you, Silver?"
How could she what? Ah, yes, that. It wasn't her fault that those students had had to have been sent to the infirmary! It was their fault for bugging her, not hers. But Link didn't see it that way.
She sat down on a bench, continuing to ignore her brother. There were plenty of people about. They were all 'insane'. Well, most of them weren't, but they were all gifted, like them. Speaking of people, there was one now. Silver turned her cold gaze to them, and so did Link, though his was considerably warmer. 'Ignore them,' she wished silently, knowing Link would hear her. Hear her and ignore her.
"Hi," he said gently. He was like that when he thought the person might feel a little insecure. "Mackenzie, right? You're new? Welcome to Hollowcove." Link kept up his blinding big smile, while Silver snorted.

And so today began the first day of her stay at the Hollowcove Institute for the clinically insane. Everywhere she walked, there were kids just like her, in the same predicament she was in, all classified as mental cases. As Mackenzie roamed the grounds, she couldn't help but look around, intently watching each of the students' behaviors. After all, some of them in here were worse cases than others. Her smokey grey eyes blinked hard a couple times. Through her eyes, each subject's colors were vivid, almost blinding. The swirling lights clouded her cautious gaze.
'I really must be crazy. Why won't lights just stop for a minute.' she thought irritably in her mind.
Kenzie rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand and continued her journey across the institute with her hands in her pocket. She was still getting used to the idea of being away from home. Feh. She was snatched away for no good reason... No. There had to have been a reason. Obviously there had to be something wrong with her if she was here. She had mental issues and she clearly needed help.
Her shoulder length choppy black hair flowed behind her. Well, even though her thoughts were a little unsettle, she had to get used to the idea. She'd be here as long as she needed to be... whether she liked it or not. She tried to cheer herself up. Kenzie believed it was much better just to have a bright disposition about things, even when they appear to be running down the tubes.
She suddenly noticed two students. One was a younger girl and the other was an older boy. The girl seemed upset, frightening almost, while the boy had a warmth radiating from his attitude. And then he said her name. She practically wanted to stumble over herself, but she gracefully stopped, toe to heel, in front of him. A small smile curled up on her face. It was so nice to be welcomed so cheerfully by someone here. It put her at ease.
"Yeah, call me Kenzie. I don't believe we've met." she held out a soft hand for him.

Link took her hand and shook it vigorously and enthusiastically. "Nice ta meet you, Kenzie! I doubt you'll enjoy your stay here, but don't worry. I'm sure the lights will stop soon," he added reassuringly. Link tended to respond to thoughts as well as words. He was so at ease with it that he hardly ever considered that it might unnerve people a little. But he had their best intentions at heart. Silver believed that he would never be able to hurt a person. As for her... different story.
Link was acting like he had known Mackenzie for his entire life, chattering on about her thoughts. "No, there's nothing wrong with you. There's hardly anything wrong with anybody here, except Silver." Silver glared at him and thought hard. 'I'm not wearing gloves today, Link, watch out,'. Link's smile faltered for a moment, but then it came back fullforce, with enough power to blind the sun. Seriously, you could use it for solar power instead.
"So, Kenzie, what do you do? I think it's more polite to ask personal stuff like that, instead of routing around for it. I'm a telepath, as you can see. It's fun! Is your gift fun? Silver's isn't. EEK! Don't hurt me!" he cowered from Silver for a moment as she glared at him again. Then she switched her glare to Mackenzie.

Kenzie stared wide eyed at the babbling overly cheery boy who just continued to confuse her. She was frozen. How did he know about the lights? Could he see them too? Her head tilted to the side and grey orbs eyed him questionably. Her face merely twitched. He was so precise, answering her thoughts as if she spoke them aloud. She didn't understand it. Blinking quickly, she tried to find the words to say, but all she felt was a lump in her throat.
So he was a telepath. Well now it made sense. Had they mistaken him for a mental case? They must have. The poor boy is here for no reason now... or maybe he did have a reason? The new wave of questions soared over her head, giving her a throbbing headache in the process. He tried to cheer her up by saying there was nothing wrong with her, but how was that right? She sees lights and colors and believes she glows in the dark! How is there nothing wrong with that? Yet, he asked so nonchalantly about a gift of some sort which continued to leave her baffled.
She shook her head lightly and ran a hand through her dark hair, letting it linger near the ends where she twisted her fingers around the black strands. "My gift?" she questioned. "I mean, I don't know what you're talking about. The doctors said I was a Schizophrenic. I see things, colored lights, but no one else sees them. I'm even crazy enough to think my own body emits light, like I'm a firefly. But you've got to be mad to believe something like that. I'm just here to get the help... I guess."
She opened up to the boy and her sister, but as she finished, she began to wonder if maybe the kids here weren't ill. Maybe there was something she was missing. Maybe she wasn't crazy... There was a piece to this new puzzle that unsettled her quite a bit.

Link sucked in his breath. "Oh," he said, serious for once. "So that's what they told you. Kenzie, you only think you're schizo. You're gift might be going a bit haywire at the moment, but you're not crazy. The only person who's truly, really crazy is this little girl right here," he proudly proffered Silver to Mackenzie. Okay, maybe she was a bit crazy. Bipolar, schizophrenic, that's what she was diagnosed. Not that the doctors had ever come close enough to touch her, or else they would've been in extreme, exquisite pain. Exquisite to her. Pain was an art that should be admired and feared. And she could create it.
"Why am I here?" Link assumed a thoughtful expression and pose, attempting to look sophesticated, but his sister ruined it. "Yes, why are you here, Link?" Silver was just being a wee bit hostile. She turned to Mackenzie. "Link here was trying to bust me out, but failed horribly. Now he's stuck here too and there's no way to get out."
Poor Mackenzie, thought Link. Don't be mean to her Silver. Please. She's scared, I think. The doctors called her crazy, her parents shipped her off, and her gift's driving her slightly insane. It's not like us. And of course there's some piece to the puzzle missing. You have to find it.

This was ridiculous. Now that she had a new view of her illness, she didn't know what was right, what to believe. Her body was unsteady and she felt herself tipping over from one side to another. It was just a lot of information to pack down her throat. Quickly she dropped, gracefully crossing her legs beneath her and falling in to a sitting up position. Kenzie's brow furrowed and tried to put all these messed up pieces together.
Taking her hand to her brow while the other held her elbow, she rubbed her forehead. Her eyebrow twitched in frustration."So lemme get this straight. You're here because you're a telepath and she's here because she has a certain power. I'm here because I have some crazy power that no one believes and I'm not really a wack job. I was diagnosed as a Schizo and taken away from my parents because they want to analyze me and use me like a science experiment. All this because some sicko is amused with ruining poor kids' lives and covering it up by saying they're protecting us?"she finished shooting her eyes up and meeting with his. 'Is any of that right? Huh?' She thought, knowing she could hear him.
Her blood was boiling. You could almost see the steam rising from her body as it shook with anger and the tears welded up in her eyes. She tried so desperately to keep her voice low in fear of the punishments many of the students have received from misconduct. That was the last thing she wanted right now. She tried to choke back the frustration and anger, but she was already at the peek of this emotional rollercoaster to turn back now.
The vivid lights only strengthened, blinding her vision as they flashed rapidly. She could almost feel one of her episodes coming on, but she fought back. All the build up was channeled instead. The subtle glow around her body grew, allowing little colored smokey lights to swirl around her in a lifelike painting. There were blues and yellows and pinks of all kinds. The light appeared attracted to her as if she was gathering it from the open air. The colors followed any slight movements she made. She was a human firefly, a glowstick, and she had no idea anyone else but her could see what was occurring at this very second.

"Yeah, pretty much you got it all right, but shhh!" he leaned in conspiratorily, his eyes darting around and a finger on his mouth. "It's a secret!" Of course it was a secret. Not many kids knew the real reason why they were here. But Silver did, thanks to Link (annoying mind-reading brothers really came in use sometimes). And Link seemed to have made it his personal mission to alert everyone in the school to it. Deep down, Silver was scared for him, scared for her. She might wake up one morning, go meet with him, and there would be no one there. And then she'd be all alone again.
She was shaken out of her thoughts by the girl. What was going on? She looked like she was about to cry, and was even shaking a bit. Link noticed it too, surprsingly. "Hey, Kenzie? Are you alright? You're kind of, um..." 'Glowing, brother?' Silver thought sarcastically. 'She looks like some sort of firefly. Can I squish her?' Link's answer was cut off by Kenzie's new actions. More light were gathering around her, swarming her ever action. Link thought, somewhat tearfully happy, that she looked like a human rainbow. He had always wanted to see one! But Silver shook him out of it by elbowing him hard. Mackenzie could be in some sort of troubel. That's what powers usually did.
"Wow Mackenzie," Link kept on staring, looking quite impressed. "Nice gift!" Silver rolled her eyes, and, standing up on tippy toe, hit him on the back on the head. "That's not important, idiot. Mackenzie, can you turn off the lights? We can't attract any teachers," If she couldn't, Silver would know what to do. Nothing like a little pain to take your mind off of things.
