The tiny practice room should have made Nick feel claustrophobic, but it didn't. Here, he felt calm, relaxed, secure. He had taken his time opening the instrument case, carefully setting the reed and mouthpiece in place on the tenor sax, adjusting the length of his neck strap and warming up with a blues scale. The ritual of setting up, putting everything in its place, was one of the comforting aspects of coming here to practice. He had even set up a music stand, although his folder sat on it unopened.
Now that he had warmed up, he could break from the carefully ordered ritual. He began to play improv, letting the music go where it wanted to and take him along with it.

I inched around the corner that led to the door of Hollowcove's band room, trying to get a look at who was playing. My ebony hair is falling in front of my face, but I don't want to make any sound, so I don't blow it back or anything. A skinny, brown haired boy is sitting in the band room playing the sax. It sounds so cool! Yes, you like the music. Now will you do something besides gape at whoever is playing it? And by that I mean take a step forward and introduce yourself, or leave. Ignoring. As I chatted with Kira, I hadn't notice that I had taken a step forward. Hey! Why did you do tha- I struggled to stay where I was as Kira tried to make me step forward again. My purple and black boots made a small scratching sound as I took a step backwards, back behind the door. I silently cursed the school uniform, because I had chosen this day to wear the skirt that went with it instead of the pants.
