Josh can easily sense how people are feeling, and subtly influence their emotions. He can't change how people feel in an instant, but slowly and gradually turns the intensity of an emotion up or down. Also, he cannot influence an emotion that someone is not actually feeling - ie for him to make someone extremely angry, they have to be feeling at least a tiny bit annoyed first.Personality:
Outwardly, Josh can seem caring, polite and charming, although this depends on whether he can be bothered making you like him or not. He dislikes most people, and thinks nothing of using them for his own means. Although the name for his ability of reading and amplifying emotions is "empathy", Josh has little of that. He feels the emotions of those he manipulates, but in a detached, logical way - more of a scientific observation than a feeling. His own emotions are kept carefully in check, and it is hard to tell how he actually feels much of the time - or how much of the truth he is telling.Appearance:
Josh's hair is a very dark brown, and long enough to look scruffy when it's not brushed. His eyes are greyish-green, and strangely flat-looking. He is slightly taller than average for his age, and although he is not extremely ripped, the lean muscles in his arms and shoulders suggest that he could hold his own in a fight. There is a long scar on his left bicep. Josh isn't highly into bright colours or unusual clothes. He normally wears black cargo pants or jeans, and long-sleeved t-shirts in grey or dark blue/green. Always aware of the importance of appearances and first impressions, he keeps his nails clean and tidy and his shoelaces tied. His posture is perfect.History:
At first, nothing about his appearance suggests anything out of the ordinary. He doesn't look crazy, does he? He seems like such a nice young man. But if you were to meet him when he didn't have his charm turned on, you would notice something strange about the way he looked at you - the same way he'd look at a stepladder or a sandwich.
An extremely intelligent child, Josh was understimulated and terribly frustrated by his parents, teachers and classmates. His gift arose as an outlet for his unbridled potential. Being able to feel the emotions of those around him meant that he learnt quickly how much physical and emotional pain humans could inflict upon one another, and this led him to become the detached, uncaring individual he is today.RP Example:
His school guidance counsellor, concerned at what was happening to him, urged his parents to send him to a school for gifted students, but they ignored the advice until it was too late. When a car crash killed three people everyone considered Josh's "friends" (he thought of them more as stepping-stones), the counsellor, horrified by his lack of emotion, referred him to a psychiatrist who diagnosed him with antisocial personality disorder - leading to his arrival at Hollowcove.
