Age: 15

Position: Student
Gift: Teleportation
Gift Specification:
Nick’s gift of instant travel from one place to another would be powerful, in the right hands – but he has absolutely no control over it. His teleportations are triggered by his emotions – especially stress or fear. They are different every time – from the distance travelled, to the violence of the change, to whether various things on an around Nick at the time of the teleportation (such as items he is holding or wearing) travel with him or not. Teleporting often makes Nick feel nauseous and disoriented. Official diagnosis: Delusional and/or schizophrenic.Personality:
The teachers tell him that he is crazy, and he truly believes it. Why else would he suddenly find himself in a different place to where he thought he was, clothing optional? He doesn’t think that he teleports, but that he blacks out and goes nuts, waking up somewhere else. In fact, he was actually more mentally sound before coming here.Appearance:
If it weren’t for these “crazy spells” and his battered self-esteem, he would be a pretty normal kid. He genuinely cares about people, and is kind and trusting, if a little naïve. It is the fact that he is so normal otherwise that horrifies Nick the most about the fact that he is “insane”. This is why he trusts the teachers, and never questions their treatments, the mildest of which could be labelled “unorthodox”.
Nick has spiky, medium-brown hair with dark blonde tips, and dark blue eyes. His eyebrows are dark and straight. They give him a serious expression when he is not smiling, but when he smiles his face changes completely. He has always been a skinny kid, and although he has finally grown a little taller recently, he still considers himself short. This, combined with his gangliness, makes him seem awkward at times.History:
Nick never wears a watch. He has a line of bumps and scars on the back of his neck running from the base of his skull to the top of his spine. These are where the Institute’s “teachers” have operated on him, inserting and removing various types of GPS tracking microchips.
Nick’s gift was triggered from its dormancy one day when he was twelve, while he was surfing. He was dumped by a wave and found himself being dragged out to sea in a rip. He panicked, and teleported – slamming into the beach fully clothed and taking his surfboard and a swimming pool worth of salt water with him. This was his most powerful teleportation. Extremely confused by what had happened, he managed to ignore it, until his nightmares began to trigger weaker, more frequent teleportations. Policemen began to bring him home naked in the middle of the night, and everyone assumed he was sleepwalking, until it began to happen in the daytime too. Nick had no more idea what was going on than anyone else, and was relieved when the official diagnosis came through. He wanted nothing more than to be normal again, and it seemed that the Hollowcove Institute would do that.RP Example: Image URL: www.adpic-images.com/data/picture/detail/happy_teenager_177448.jpg
He arrived at the Institute when he was thirteen – one year after his first teleportation. This wasn’t the best environment to foster the stability, well-being and mental health of a small, shy boy. After being picked on by some of the more sociopathic inmates, he quickly became not only shy but also twitchy, paranoid and flighty. This made his teleportations worse – but the teachers wanted to study them in detail, so they encouraged the behaviour. He has changed therapy groups several times, for different reasons. Several of the Hollowcove Institute’s “students” refuse to believe that Nick exists. He appears and disappears out of nowhere – he must just be another hallucination. As you can imagine, this isn’t so brilliant for his self-esteem either.
Relationships:
Parents and a brother - Kit Taylor.Other:
Nick enjoys music, and uses it to relax – this being a good thing for him because when he is relaxed, he doesn’t teleport. He plays the tenor saxophone and harmonica well, and is a half-decent singer. His elective classes include Music and Photography.
